Smart Restart

Along with the university’s commitment to a Smart Restart, we’ve been working to research, benchmark, and implement a plan to protect the health and safety of our participants, members, and staff.

Disease does not discriminate. COVID-19 is not specific to an ethnicity or race. Racist behaviors or stereotyping are not tolerated at UW–Madison. If you experience harassment or discrimination, students are encouraged to file a bias incident report. Employees may file a complaint with the Office of Compliance.

This is an accordion element with a series of buttons that open and close related content panels.

Current members

All current Classic members (Campus Affiliate, Household Adult, and Alumni) will have access to the Nicholas Recreation Center through October 11, 2020 for a free trial period. For those who would like to continue using the Nicholas Recreation Center after October 11, information on how to upgrade to an All-Access Membership will be shared in early October.

If you have a non-recurring membership (you paid for a 1, 4, or 12-month membership and it was active as of March 14, 2020), we have automatically extended your original membership end date by the number of days we were closed due to COVID-19. If any future closures occur, your end date will continue to be extended accordingly.

If you have a recurring monthly membership, you will be charged at the beginning of September. You’ll see a charge on your credit card between September 1 – 10. Recurring charges will continue monthly until you cancel your membership.

If you would like to cancel your membership, please see the Cancellations & Refunds section below for details.

Cancellations & refunds

If you have a non-recurring membership and would like to cancel your membership or locker rental due to our COVID-19 closure:

  • Refund requests for the COVID facility closure must be submitted before October 1, 2020. Please contact hello@recwell.wisc.edu to request your prorated refund for your membership or locker for days we were closed due to COVID. Shell ice locker rentals will not be refunded. Your refund will be calculated based on the number of days remaining in your extended membership or locker rental from the date of refund request.
  • As of October 1, no refunds will be given for past or future closures related to COVID. If we have any future closures related to COVID, we will continue to extend your membership for the days we are closed

If you have a recurring monthly membership and would like to cancel your  membership:

  • September payments were charged at the beginning of September. October payments will be charged on recurring memberships and passes on October 1, 2020. If you would like to cancel prior to the October charge, you must fill out this form by 11:59pm on September 30, 2020. No refunds will be provided for any future recurring charges.
  • Refund requests for the COVID facility closure must be submitted before October 1, 2020. Please contact hello@recwell.wisc.eduto request your prorated refund for your membership or locker for days we were closed due to COVID. As of October 1, no refunds will be given for past or future closures related to COVID.

Towel service refunds:

  • Towel service will not be refunded unless purchased between February 14 – March 14, 2020; in that case, a full refund will be provided
  • You must submit a refund request before October 1, 2020; refund requests submitted after October 1, 2020 will not be granted

New members

New members can purchase recurring monthly memberships when we reopen. Long-term memberships (4 and 12 months) are unavailable for purchase in order to allow for more flexibility.

We have Classic and All-Access (includes access to the Nicholas Recreation Center) membership options. Please see our Memberships page for more information.

Why can’t I purchase a long-term membership? We temporarily suspended our 4-month and 12-month memberships to allow for simplicity and ease during these uncertain times. In the case that we may have to pause, stop, or restart memberships again in the future, monthly recurring memberships are more flexible for members. Once we have reached a more stable situation on campus, we anticipate that those membership options will be available.

Lockers

Locker service is currently unavailable at all facilities.

If you had a locker at the Shell or Nielsen Tennis Stadium on March 14, 2020, you have two options:

  1. Keep your assigned lock and locker. When we’re able to resume locker service in the future, we’ll extend the end date of your locker the number of days locker service was suspended due to COVID-19. You will not be able to access your locker during this time except to retrieve your belongings during your first visit back to our facilities.
  2. Email hello@recwell.wisc.edu to request a partial refund for your locker service.

If you had a locker at the Natatorium and were unable to pick up your items August 3-7: lockers were cleaned out and items were moved to Nielsen Tennis Stadium to prepare the Natatorium for demolition. Details have been sent to locker holders whose items were transported to NTS. Please email hello@recwell.wisc.edu with any questions.

Towel service

Towel service is currently unavailable at all facilities.
