Group Fitness

Enjoy fun and motivating group workouts designed for all fitness levels. Whether you want to connect to your breath with yoga or pump up the beat with Zumba, you’ll find what you’re looking for in our wide variety of classes.

In-person classes

Due to Public Health Madison & Dane County Emergency Order #10, all in-person group fitness classes are cancelled starting November 18 through the end of the semester.

A few things to note: 

  • Masks are required at all times and you should stay home if you’re feeling sick or have had known exposure to COVID-19.
  • You may arrive at the Nick no earlier than 15 minutes before class begins. A Rec Well staff member will be at the turnstiles to check you in for class. If there’s a line because we’ve reached capacity, you may go around it to check in for class.
  • When you check in, you’ll show your Wiscard, receive a paper ticket, and be directed to the studio. For now, all non-Cycling classes will be in Elevation Studio, which is on the fourth floor of the building. All Cycling classes will be in the Revolution Studio, which is on the lower level. Remember to pick up a spray bottle and towel on your way to the studio and secure your belongings in a day use locker.
  • Shortly before the start of class, our staff member will unlock and open the studio. There will be 10 spot markers, spaced out to allow for physical distancing. Please choose your spot and place the top left corner of your mat or equipment next to the spot marker.
  • For the health and safety of everyone, late entry will not be permitted and no exit/re-entry will be allowed after class has started. If you must leave due to an emergency, you will not be able to return to class.
  • At the end of class, please clean your equipment with your spray bottle and exit the studio. If you’d like to stay in the building, you must exit and re-enter to maintain accurate capacity counts.
  • Our staff will clean all equipment and the studio after participants have left.

Virtual classes

Registration is required. Registration opens 48 hours before class and closes 1 minute prior to the start of class. After you register, you’ll receive an email with a link to join the class, which will open 10 minutes before class. 


Virtual classes

  • Participants must be 18 years or older to participate in group fitness classes
  • Please be advised that by entering a group fitness class, you consent to be photographed, filmed or otherwise appear on camera for the purposes of live streaming of fitness classes by Recreation & Wellbeing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

In-person classes

  • Athletic footwear is required for all Group Fitness classes except Yoga, Powerflow, and Deep Water classes
  • Participants must be 18 years or older to participate in group fitness classes
  • Please arrive on time for class; for the health and safety of all participants and employees, and to avoid interruptions, absolutely no late entries will be permitted and no exit/re-entry will be permitted after class has started
  • A minimum of three participants is required for all classes to be held
  • This is a no phone zone. Please avoid cell phone use while class is in session; if necessary, please make calls and texts outside of the room
  • The use of mobile technology at any time for photo or video purposes is strictly prohibited unless approved in advance by the Marketing & Communications department (click here to submit a Marketing & Media Request)
  • Out of respect for the instructor and others, please avoid conversations while class is in session

Please note: exercise is not without its risks and this or any other exercise program many result in injury. Do not start this fitness program if your physician or health care provider advises against it, or if you have a medical or physical condition that may increase your risk of injury or death. If you experience faintness, dizziness, pain or shortness of breath at any time while exercising you should stop immediately. Please be sure to check that any equipment or space in which you use to exercise is safe and not at risk of causing harm to you or those who may be around you. Those following the workout routines do so at their own risk. Programming is intended for audiences 18 and older.

Fitness with Outdoor UW

Throughout the year, we partner with Outdoor UW to offer yoga and fitness classes at various locations including the Memorial Union, Allen Centennial Gardens, the Terrace, and Alumni Park. Access to all Outdoor UW fitness classes are included in your Group Fitness Pass. Members with a Group Fitness Pass will receive a promo code within 24 hours of purchasing a Pass.

Classes include: Winter Yoga, Alumni Park Yoga, Bootcamp, Sunrise Yoga, Sunset Yoga, SUP Yoga, and Terrace Yoga.

We offer private group fitness classes for UW student organizations, UW residence halls and UW departments. Request a class in our facilities (internal event) or in a space provided by your group (external event).

Internal Events (held in Rec Well facilities)

Available class formats include Zumba, Yoga, Powerflow, Core Training, Tabata, HIIT, Group Cycling and Group Strength. Rates include instruction, space rental, fitness equipment and sound system. Users must have appropriate athletic footwear. Only water is permitted in the activity space and must be in enclosed containers. No other food or drink will be allowed. If you wish to photograph or video record the class, you must obtain prior permission.
